News: Xbox Live ditching Xbox 1 support

Microsoft has announced that it will discontinue Xbox Live support for original Xbox consoles and games on 15th April.

This not only applies to the old consoles, but also to Xbox games that are compatible with Xbox 360 and Xbox Originals.

"I want to start by saying this isn't a decision we made lightly, but after careful consideration, it is clear this will provide the greatest benefit to the Xbox Live community," Microsoft's Marc Whitten wrote in an open letter announcing the change.

"Your Xbox Live community has grown to 23 million strong. And as we look down the road, we'll continue to evolve the service with features and experiences that harness the full power of Xbox 360.

"To reach our aspiration, we need to make changes to the service that are incompatible with our original Xbox v1 games. We will contact the Xbox Live members directly impacted by this change and if this includes you, I encourage you to check your Live messages and associated e-mail account over the coming weeks for more details and opportunities."

Xbox Live launched for the original console on 17th November 2002 with support from games like MechAssault, Unreal Championship and MotoGP.

But by far the most popular game on the service was Halo 2, which has held firm at the top of the most-played charts on Major Nelson's website pretty much solidly since its release.

Metroid: Other M cut-scene screenshot

There has not been much information released regarding Metroid: Other M since it’s debut at E3 2009, so any information on the highly anticipated Metroid game for Wii is certainly exciting for fans of the long-running Nintendo staple.

During a recent interview with Nintendo producer and chief Metroid designer Yoshio Sakamoto, he discussed the game and gave some new details about it.

First of all he discussed how the game is a collaboration between Nintendo and Team Ninja (who are creating the game) and a company called D-Rockets that will be handling the computer-generated cut-scenes.

“This project between three companies, which we call Project M, is progressing extremely well. This Metroid is being developed with the aim of the ideal form of the old Metroid,” said Sakamoto.

Naturally, Team Ninja’s goal is to help Nintendo in making the transition from “2D jump action game” into “3D action.” with a quality that will satisfy players of all stripes and hardcore gamers/Metroid fans in particular.

He also stated that it is because of the power of the Wii that this game can be realized.

Famitsu pointed out that Metroid is more successful overseas than in Japan. Sakamoto admitted that this is the case, but added, “However, different from the rest of the series, this time we’re strongly depicting the human side of Samus through such things as movies. She’s a strong woman, but she also has a fragile side. We want to make a game whose charms can be felt from the story areas and these human touches as well. It’s an action game, but it’s capable of having a clear emotional side.”

Sakamoto hopes to release the game this year, something that Nintendo confirmed last week.

Borderlands patch 1.21 fixes multiplayer problems

Borderlands Multiplayer Glitch Patch 1.21 has been released for PC which fixes some significant problems with the multiplayer that some gamers experienced.

This means no more forwarding ports or messing with that aspect of the game to get it to work properly, if you were someone with those issues.

Here’s the exact list of what’s been fixed:

* Multiplayer connectivity has been improved; users should no longer be required to forward ports to host or join multiplayer games.

* Players who experienced distorted shadows or graphical glitches after update 1.0.1 should no longer experience these issues.

* The 3D Vision crosshair has been improved.

Sounds like this is a good chance for previous buyers to give multi another chance.

Nights Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing screenshot

The Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing cast keeps growing. Sadly Nights fans won’t be overly joyed . . . because Nights is not actually a playable character in the game.

Rather Nights has become the Flagholder in the game. Sega states:

"We've given NiGHTS a very important role. He starts all the races, and also finishes them too! He also resides over Time Trial, whenever you set a new lap record, you'll have NiGHTS flying along with you celebrating!

I have to admit the main reason he's in was after we saw your heartfelt pleas, especially those of DiGi and TRiPPY, we had to make sure NiGHTS was in and played an important role. After all, we really didn't want them to burn all their collection now. So whilst he's not playable, he very much made it in, and as a result of the huge amount of support for the character that you all showed.”

Sega also addressed whether this means that Nights is out as a playable character for good.

“Does this mean that NiGHTS may not be in future DLC? Well who can say. That's a question I can't answer right now – it all depends on how well the game does ."

In addition to Nights, Sega also revealed more playable characters. They include: Jacky and Akira from Virtua Fighter and Mobo and Rob who make their first appearance in 20 years! You can see both of the aforementioned in the pics below, with Nights in the pic above.

Assassin's Creed 2: Multiplayer iPhone/iPod Touch screenshots

Not only is Assassin’s Creed 2: Discovery now on iTunes, but Ubisoft has already announced a new AC iPhone game: Assassin’s Creed 2: Multiplayer.

This new game will be “coming soon” and is a multiplayer-only Assassin’s Creed game (as the name suggests) where you use Wi-Fi to connect with up to three other players in a lethal game of “hide and seek” set within the world of Assassin’s Creed.

In this game, the goal is simply to Assassinate the other players before they Assassinate you. Like in the actual game, players can use the crowd to their advantage by blending in to avoid detection. The game will also include three cities to play in inspired by the Italian Renaissance. And just to insure that you know you are playing a multiplayer game based on “fun” and not “realism”, the game will even include six different power-ups!

Besides the new power-up features, the game will include a dynamic notoriety ranking system, a built-in friends list, and will include over 24 achievements that you can earn and subsequently can post to Facebook to show off to your friends.
