News: Xbox Live ditching Xbox 1 support

Microsoft has announced that it will discontinue Xbox Live support for original Xbox consoles and games on 15th April.

This not only applies to the old consoles, but also to Xbox games that are compatible with Xbox 360 and Xbox Originals.

"I want to start by saying this isn't a decision we made lightly, but after careful consideration, it is clear this will provide the greatest benefit to the Xbox Live community," Microsoft's Marc Whitten wrote in an open letter announcing the change.

"Your Xbox Live community has grown to 23 million strong. And as we look down the road, we'll continue to evolve the service with features and experiences that harness the full power of Xbox 360.

"To reach our aspiration, we need to make changes to the service that are incompatible with our original Xbox v1 games. We will contact the Xbox Live members directly impacted by this change and if this includes you, I encourage you to check your Live messages and associated e-mail account over the coming weeks for more details and opportunities."

Xbox Live launched for the original console on 17th November 2002 with support from games like MechAssault, Unreal Championship and MotoGP.

But by far the most popular game on the service was Halo 2, which has held firm at the top of the most-played charts on Major Nelson's website pretty much solidly since its release.

Metroid: Other M cut-scene screenshot

There has not been much information released regarding Metroid: Other M since it’s debut at E3 2009, so any information on the highly anticipated Metroid game for Wii is certainly exciting for fans of the long-running Nintendo staple.

During a recent interview with Nintendo producer and chief Metroid designer Yoshio Sakamoto, he discussed the game and gave some new details about it.

First of all he discussed how the game is a collaboration between Nintendo and Team Ninja (who are creating the game) and a company called D-Rockets that will be handling the computer-generated cut-scenes.

“This project between three companies, which we call Project M, is progressing extremely well. This Metroid is being developed with the aim of the ideal form of the old Metroid,” said Sakamoto.

Naturally, Team Ninja’s goal is to help Nintendo in making the transition from “2D jump action game” into “3D action.” with a quality that will satisfy players of all stripes and hardcore gamers/Metroid fans in particular.

He also stated that it is because of the power of the Wii that this game can be realized.

Famitsu pointed out that Metroid is more successful overseas than in Japan. Sakamoto admitted that this is the case, but added, “However, different from the rest of the series, this time we’re strongly depicting the human side of Samus through such things as movies. She’s a strong woman, but she also has a fragile side. We want to make a game whose charms can be felt from the story areas and these human touches as well. It’s an action game, but it’s capable of having a clear emotional side.”

Sakamoto hopes to release the game this year, something that Nintendo confirmed last week.

Borderlands patch 1.21 fixes multiplayer problems

Borderlands Multiplayer Glitch Patch 1.21 has been released for PC which fixes some significant problems with the multiplayer that some gamers experienced.

This means no more forwarding ports or messing with that aspect of the game to get it to work properly, if you were someone with those issues.

Here’s the exact list of what’s been fixed:

* Multiplayer connectivity has been improved; users should no longer be required to forward ports to host or join multiplayer games.

* Players who experienced distorted shadows or graphical glitches after update 1.0.1 should no longer experience these issues.

* The 3D Vision crosshair has been improved.

Sounds like this is a good chance for previous buyers to give multi another chance.

Nights Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing screenshot

The Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing cast keeps growing. Sadly Nights fans won’t be overly joyed . . . because Nights is not actually a playable character in the game.

Rather Nights has become the Flagholder in the game. Sega states:

"We've given NiGHTS a very important role. He starts all the races, and also finishes them too! He also resides over Time Trial, whenever you set a new lap record, you'll have NiGHTS flying along with you celebrating!

I have to admit the main reason he's in was after we saw your heartfelt pleas, especially those of DiGi and TRiPPY, we had to make sure NiGHTS was in and played an important role. After all, we really didn't want them to burn all their collection now. So whilst he's not playable, he very much made it in, and as a result of the huge amount of support for the character that you all showed.”

Sega also addressed whether this means that Nights is out as a playable character for good.

“Does this mean that NiGHTS may not be in future DLC? Well who can say. That's a question I can't answer right now – it all depends on how well the game does ."

In addition to Nights, Sega also revealed more playable characters. They include: Jacky and Akira from Virtua Fighter and Mobo and Rob who make their first appearance in 20 years! You can see both of the aforementioned in the pics below, with Nights in the pic above.

Assassin's Creed 2: Multiplayer iPhone/iPod Touch screenshots

Not only is Assassin’s Creed 2: Discovery now on iTunes, but Ubisoft has already announced a new AC iPhone game: Assassin’s Creed 2: Multiplayer.

This new game will be “coming soon” and is a multiplayer-only Assassin’s Creed game (as the name suggests) where you use Wi-Fi to connect with up to three other players in a lethal game of “hide and seek” set within the world of Assassin’s Creed.

In this game, the goal is simply to Assassinate the other players before they Assassinate you. Like in the actual game, players can use the crowd to their advantage by blending in to avoid detection. The game will also include three cities to play in inspired by the Italian Renaissance. And just to insure that you know you are playing a multiplayer game based on “fun” and not “realism”, the game will even include six different power-ups!

Besides the new power-up features, the game will include a dynamic notoriety ranking system, a built-in friends list, and will include over 24 achievements that you can earn and subsequently can post to Facebook to show off to your friends.

Thunderbird 3.1 will be the next release of Thunderbird and the first alpha release marks a new milestone towards that goal. The Thunderbird developers ask interested users to test the new email client but also warn anyone from installing the email client in a productive environment as it is an alpha version that can contain bugs.

The most notable changes in Thunderbird 3.1 alpha are:

  • upgrade of the layout engine to Gecko 1.9.2.
  • Several improvements to IMAP.
  • Several fixes for Smart Folders, message filters, and attachment handling.
  • Several design improvements and corrections to the interface.
  • Download Manager is now accessible as a menu item (Tools > Saved Files).
  • Stability and memory improvements.

Bugzilla lists a total of 147 bug fixes and changes in Thunderbird 3.1 alpha of which 2 have been rated as blockers (highest rating) and 14 as critical. Several of the critical bugs fix issues when updating from Thunderbird 2 to Thunderbird 3. Others fix crashes and fix other issues.

Users who are interested in trying out Thunderbird 3.1 alpha can download the email client from the Mozilla Messaging website.

Alan Wake 2 is wait and see says Microsoft

Alan Wake 2 and 3 is something Microsoft is taking a “wait and see” approach with according to a new interview with CVG.

It’s already been stated in the past that Remedy hopes Alan Wake will be such a success that many more sequels will follow. And it’s common knowledge amongst those that have been following the game that Alan Wake is seen as the beginning of the storyline.

However, as usually is the case, Microsoft will wait and see how the first highly anticipated long-awaited Alan Wake is received sales-wise before commiting to more games in the series. It is currently set for release this Spring.

“It’s unique and gripping story – heavily influenced by pop culture classics – is brought to life using techniques reminiscent of modern movies and TV shows,” Microsoft product marketing manager Laura Disney told CVG.

“The goal of Alan Wake is create an intense experience for the player, and though ‘psychological thriller’ might not be a genre we are used to applying to games, Alan Wake is definitely not something you’ve experienced before.”

Speaking in our exclusive interview, Disney added: “As Robbie Bach announced at CES earlier this month, the episodic nature of Alan Wake will see DLC become available for title later in the year. As for a sequel, we’ll have to wait and see…”

Below you can watch the opening moments of Alan Wake.

Key features of Stargate Resistance include:

* Expanding Universe: New content including maps, weapons, and classes enter the fray through future expansions.

Wordpress Custom Tag Templates

Tags are an essential part of nearly every Wordpress blog. Webmasters use tags to categorize posts. One side-effect of tagging posts in Wordpress is that these tags are sometimes indexed by search engines. Visitors from those search engines will then see a page containing excerpts of the posts that have been tagged with that tag.

This can result in two problems for the webmaster. Problem one is indexation. It can happen that a tag page gets indexed instead of the actual post. There are plugins that can deal with that problem by adding canonical tags to those links so that the search engines know that the post page should be indexed with priority for the keyword and not the tags page.

The second problem is that the tag page can irritate search engine users as they only see excerpts and not a single article. This can look spammy to some and might have a negative impact on a visitor’s perception of the page and the website in general.

We have posted an option to create custom tag pages in Wordpress back in April of last year and that method is still valid and working.

This method basically creates a new template file for each tag that the webmaster wants to customize. It can for instance be used to display an introduction to visitors so that they know what the page is about. This method allows the posting of media as well as text on the tag pages.

Posting those additional information can be beneficial to the search engine indexation of the tag page as well since it adds unique content to those pages.

The disadvantage of that method is that a new template file needs to be created for each tag that the webmaster wants to customize. This is impractical for websites with thousands of tags.

Another method was posted at the Likemind blog. This new method has been introduced in Wordpress 2.8. It makes use of a new tag variable called description which can be added to the tag’s template so that it will be displayed on the tag pages of the website.

Some Wordpress themes come without a tag.php file. If that is the case it needs to be created and modified to include the description. The easiest way to do so is to copy the index.php file and rename the copy to tag.php. The following code needs to be added before the loop in tag.php

<!–Start Code–>
<?php $tag_desc = tag_description(); ?>
<?php if($tag_desc) : ?>
<div class="tag-description">
<?php print $tag_desc ;?>
</div>
<?php endif; ?>
<!–End Code–>

Each tag page will from then on display the tag’s description if available. Tag descriptions can be edited in the Posts > Post Tags menu in the Wordpress admin interface.

The benefit of this approach is that only one template needs to be created and that everything else can be handled from within the Wordpress admin area. That tag description can also be used as the meta description. There are some disadvantages though as it is difficulty to add formatting and media to the description (if at all possible).

Opera NoScript Alternative BlockIt

Regular readers know that I would make the switch away from Firefox to either Google Chrome or Opera if those web browsers would support both NoScript functionality and Last Pass. NoScript is a security add-on for Firefox that blocks scripts from being loaded when the website loads. The user has afterwards the option to enable scripts selectively so that they are displayed on the page. Last Pass on the other hand is a password manager.

So far only Last Pass has made its way to the Google Chrome browser. Daxpit, a reader of my blog, recently mentioned the BlockIt userscript that offered NoScript like functionality in the Opera web browser.

A userscript in Opera is an external script that can be loaded in the web browser. Much like add-ons but more complicated to setup in my opinion.

BlockIt is compatible with the latest versions of Opera up to Opera 10.50 which is where I have tested the script. It displays a small icon in the lower right corner of the screen. A click on that icon displays a menu that is showing the scripts on the page, the number of scripts that have been blocked, a pulldown menu listing all script names and controls to unblock scripts on the page.

All scripts that are executed normally on the page are disabled by default just like they are in NoScript. BlockIt divides the elements on the page into categories like scripts, images or embeds with the option to unblock those elements individually or completely. This is one of the differences between both scripts. NoScript ignores images as they are not scripts whereas BlockIt blocks them as well in the beginning.

The following controls are available:

  • Block: This is a button that toggles between “Unblock” and “Block”, and adds the selected element to the whitelist if “unblock” is clicked, and removed if “Block” is clicked, also when this button is clicked anything that is viewable on the page will show up(red outline) and be blocked on the spot, same if “Unblock” is clicked(but orange outline and scrolled to)
  • All: This is a button that unblocks or blocks all elements of that type, only use this if the site needs all of the elements for the page to work regularly,otherwise its good for quickly blocking/unblocking most elements quickly.
  • T-Unblock: This is a button that allows toggling this script off temporarily for the whole tab, so if you are only visiting this site temporarily and want to view it properly in its entirety, this button is for you.
  • Server: This is a button that blocks/unblocks all elements of the type based on the server name, say if you wanted all scripts from one site to be loaded but others not to be, this button does what it says on the tin.
  • Preview: This is basically a button that allows you to preview the element in a new tab, this is especially good for scripts that cannot be previewed the normal way.

BlockIt remembers the configuration changes made by the user so that elements that have been unblocked remain unblocked in future sessions. The information are stored in cookies which means that cookies need to be enabled for the settings to be saved by the script.

Tips

  • Holding shift and clicking on the “Unblock”/”Block” button is a quick shortcut for blocking all elements of the same type on the page(like clicking on the “All” button), holding ctrl is a shortcut for blocking elements based on the same servername as itself(like clicking the “Server” button).
  • Holding ctrl while clicking the “Server” button actually stores the servername for all element types, this is useful for youtube as sometimes it holds all scripts and images on similar servers
  • Holding shift while clicking the “T-unblock” button will actually only unblock everything for that url only, need to turn blocking back on again? Here is a bookmarklet that will do so. Drag this to a toolbar or bookmark it for future use. BlockIt toggle
  • BlockIt adjusts to your screen size, the user interface will shrink its font and total width accordingly, if BlockIt cannot fit, it will tell you, but this script is mainly designed to work on screens with width 300px and above.
  • By default, BlockIt will appear in the bottom right position, if you’d like to change the position, change “cornerposition” to either 1(top-left),2(top-right),3(bottom-left) or keep it as it is as 4(bottom-right)

BlockIt is a great NoScript alternative for the Opera web browser. This ties the score between Google Chrome (which got Last Pass) and Opera (which got NoScript). BlockIt can be downloaded from the forum page over at the Opera forum where the developer announced the script.

Check this instructions if you need to know how to install userscripts in Opera.

No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle continues the tale of punk anti-hero Travis Touchdown, the Japanese anime Otaku, and pro wrestling-obsessed assassin. Travis finds himself at the bottom of the UAA (United Assassins Association) rankings and must wage war to become the No. 1 assassin once again. The follow-up to the popular No More Heroes will offer fans infectious, fun gameplay that allows you to wield not just one, but two swords (four types including twin beam & giant beam katanas) and face multiple bosses simultaneously in bigger-than-ever boss battles.
